Jerusalem, Israel ---- June 24, 2009 ...... Part of the the following was communicated by the Israel Transportation and Road Safety Ministry, Dept. of International Relations to the Israel News Agency.

Israel Transportation and Road Safety Minister Yisrael Katz, Israel Civil Aviation Authority Director Giora Rom, Elbit Systems President Yossi Ackerman and El Al Director-General Chaim Romano will tomorrow 25.6.09, sign an order agreement for the Israeli "Sky Shield" aviation defensive system against shoulder-fired missiles.

There will be a demonstration of the system's capabilities in dealing with missile threats against civil aviation.

Recently, Sayed Hassan Nasrallah, the Hizbollah terror leader based in Lebanon, has been warning Israel that his organization has a “surprise” new weapon in its armory and sources in Lebanon suspect that this is a new Iran developed ground-to-air missile shoulder held rocket.

In the south of Israel, it has been reported that Israel has assessed that the Hamas terror organization is still receiving shipments of man-portable air defense systems in the Gaza Strip.

Officials said Israel's intelligence community has been tracking shipments of Russia origin surface-to-air missiles from Egypt to the Gaza Strip. They said the flow of SAMs increased in 2009 in wake of the 22-day Hamas - Israel war in January.

"Hamas realized that it could not confront an Israeli force without SAM systems," an official said. The Israel Security Agency has assessed that Hamas was acquiring SAM-7 and related systems from Egypt's Sinai Peninsula. ISA director said Hamas smuggled 46 SAM rockets since the Hamas-Israel war. The ISA supposedly knows where they are stockpiled in Gaza.

For more than 30 years, Israel’s fighter-bombers have dominated the skies, reportedly losing only two aircraft - one to a primitive Palestinian SAM-7 shoulder-fired missile, the other to Syrian anti-aircraft guns during and after its 1982 defensive conflict with Iran backed Hezbollah.

It has been known for years that thousands of light and lethal shoulder-fired missiles are in black-market circulation.

The US State Department estimates that about 1 million shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles have been produced worldwide since the 1950s. The number believed to be in the hands of "nonstate actors," such as terrorist groups, is "in the thousands," the department says.

Man-portable air-defense systems (MANPADS) are shoulder-launched surface-to-air missiles (SAMs). They are typically guided weapons and are a threat to low-flying aircraft, especially helicopters.
