Jerusalem,
Israel ---- July 10, 2009 ...... Supporting outstanding Israel
sportsmen, especially new immigrants, is one of priorities for
the Michael Cherney (Mikhail Chernoy) Foundation. For this reason
the Cherney Foundation has granted financial aid to Yakov Benenson,
who hasnt received his salary in Israel since January.
Thanks to
swimming trainer Yakov Beneson, the Israel team took 5 silver
and 1 bronze medals in Paralympics
in Beijing in 2008.
On June 2,
2009, world para-swimming championship came to a conclusion, with
487 participants from 28 countries. Three of those participants,
all trainees of Yakov Beneson (Inbal Pizaro, Iyad Shalbi and Irel
A-Levi) took home 2 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze medal.
Yakov Beneson
made Aliya 10 years ago from Orenburg (Russia) where he graduated
from the Sports Institute.
I started
to train invalids by chance," says Beneson. "In 2000
I was invited to the Ilan-sport center for the handicapped, which
has a fantastic pool, purely to entertain those that were using
the pool. But then I met Inbal Pisaro who was then 12 years old,
and immediately recognized her pure talent for water, even though
she is totally paralyzed below the waste. Today she is a world
champion in brass style and trains 8-9 times a week."
Beneson continues:
"Another trainee that I have is an Israel - Muslim Arab from
Shfaram, Iyad Shalbi, who is deaf, mostly paralyzed making
him the hardest case in the world for swimming. In the beginning
it was impossible to get through to him, he couldnt understand
what I wanted from him. But today, like Inbal, he trains 8 times
a week. How uplifting it is to see him compete with an Israel
flag on the cap and roll out to receive his medals draped in Israeli
flag, while his father stands at attention during Israeli anthem.
My third trainee, Iral A-Levi who is on crutches, just won 7 medals
in Germany."
Following
his repatriation to Israel, Michael Cherney has maintained business
interests in Russia and post-Soviet states, while developing new
commercial contacts between Russia, Europe, Israel, and the US.
In Israel, Michael Cherney spends much effort on charity and humanitarian
projects that reinforce cooperation between Israel and Russia
in fighting terrorism.
Michael Cherney
established a Website for his Foundation on June 1, 2001, the
night of the terrorist bombing outside the Dolphinarium Disco
in Tel Aviv. When Michael Cherney learned the number of victims
- 21 dead and over 150 wounded - he realized that rendering assistance
required a systematic organized effort.
Prior to 2001,
Cherney was engaged in charity work in Russia, Ukraine, Central
Asia, Bulgaria, the US - wherever he did business. He made valuable
contributions into Jewish philanthropy in Russia. Following the
Dolphinarium terrorist tragedy, the Cherney Fund became the helping
hand for all its victims. In a misfortune like this, emigres from
the former Soviet countries are even worse off than those born
in Israel: they don't have a support system or savings.
The
Cherney Fund, therefore, renders help mostly to the new arrivals,
victims of catastrophes and terrorist acts that continue to bleed
Israel, as well as to the low-income victims of terror in other
countries. Another equally important task assumed by the Cherney
Foundation is the media effort in war on terror. Shortly after
the Dolphinarium attack, the Foundation published a book called
Dolphinarium: Terror Targets the Young.
The Michael
Cherney Foundation has established grants for students from the
former Soviet Union in all major Israel universities with an annual
endowment of 1 million shekels.
