Jerusalem, Israel --- October 16, 2013 ... Part of the following was communicated by the Prime Minister's Media Adviser to the Israel News Agency.

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu observed an Armored Corps brigade-level exercise on the Golan Heights. He was briefed by IDF Deputy Chief-of-Staff Maj.-Gen. Gadi Eisenkot and GOC Northern Command Maj.-Gen. Yair Golan and said at the start of the military exercise:

"I came this evening to observe one of the many exercises that the Israel Defense Forces holds in order to maintain its readiness. Today we are marking 40 years since the Yom Kippur War. I think we have learned three main lessons from that war: The first lesson is not to deride the enemy. The second is not to give up in advance on a pre-emptive strike against an immediate and tangible threat. The third lesson is the importance of buffer zones."

Netanyahu added: "Today also marks the start of talks between Iran and the major powers, the P5 + 1. I think that it would be an historic mistake to give Iran discounts and ease up on it without it having to dismantle the nuclear capability that it is building. Iran is now on the ropes and it is possible to use the sanctions at full strength in order to achieve the desired result. I hope that the international community does this and I call upon it to do so."

The Yom Kippur War, also known as the 1973 Arab–Israeli War, was a war fought by a coalition of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria against Israel from October 6 to October 25, 1973. The war began when Egypt and Syria launched a joint surprise attack on Israeli positions in the Israeli-occupied territories on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism. Egyptian and Syrian forces crossed ceasefire lines to enter the Sinai Peninsula and Golan Heights respectively, which had been captured by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War.
Both the United States and the Soviet Union initiated massive resupply efforts to their respective allies during the war, and this led to a near-confrontation between the two nuclear superpowers.

By October 24, the Israelis had improved their positions considerably and completed their encirclement of Egypt's Third Army and the city of Suez.
