Jerusalem, Israel ---- March 14, 2011 ..... With assistance from the Michael Cherney Foundation, a unique book by Pinhas Polonsky has been produced - Israel and Humanity: A New Stage of Development. Thoughts drawn from the teachings of Rabbi Abraham-Yitzhak ha-Cohen Kook" have been published by the Machanaim Institute in Jerusalem, Israel.

The book is based on lectures by Rabbi Uri Cherki and opens a new series -"Modern Problems of Judaism in the Light of the Teachings of Rav Kook".

The first book contains seven lectures of Rabbi Cherki. Work continues on the remaining lectures and the second publication is planned for next year.

In 2008-2009 Rabbi Uri Cherki, one of the most eminent rabbis of modern Israel, read in Machanaim a series of lectures on contemporary issues of Jewish life and the State of Israel (in light of the teachings of Rabbi Abraham-Yitzhak ha-Cohen Kook).
This course has raised many important issues and gave a whole new perspective on many aspects of Jewish lives, such as relations between Israel and Humanity, system of state power from the point of view of the Torah, the religious significance of non-religious Jewry, Zionism as a challenge to traditional Judaism.

By a symbolic coincidence Israel's attitude towards Humanity was highlighted by the response to the tragedy which has struck Japan. A massive earthquake, tsunamis and nuclear radiation.

Two Israel emergency response volunteer organizations, IsraAid and ZAKA have deployed teams of volunteers to Japan.

ZAKA, whose Hebrew acronym stands for "Disaster Victims Identification," is recognized by the United Nations for disaster relief and worked in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina, in Thailand after the major tsunami and most recently in Haiti. Its core experience comes from dealing with the aftermath of terror attacks and other disasters in Israel.

The Michael Cherney Foundation is a long time benefactor of ZAKA. Along with that the Cherney's Fund hurried to render financial assistance to a number of NGOs from Japan with which it has partnered in the public relations awareness information campaign against Islamic terrorism.
