---- April 27, 2009 ...... Thousands of young people from around
the world who just a few days ago gathered in front of the gates
of the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz to commemorate Holocaust
Remembrance Day have arrived in Israel for a day of enthusiastic
celebrations on Israel's Independence Day, Wednesday, April 29th.
"With
the voices of hatred still being heard in Geneva at the Durban
Review Conference, the journey of Jewish youths from around the
world from the death camps of Poland on Yom Hashoa to the streets
of Jerusalem on Yom Haatzmaut is the best answer to Holocaust
denial and anti-Semitism," said Dr. Shmuel Rosenman, Chairman
of the International March of the Living.
The events
that will take place on Israel Independence Day include a Mass
March from Safra Square (Jerusalem City Hall) to the Western Wall
and a mega concluding event and party at the IDF Tank Corp Latrun
Memorial with the participation of Holocaust survivors who fought
in Israel's War of Independence
Since 1988,
the March of the Living has brought over 120,000 students to Poland
to participate in educational missions aimed at better understanding
the horrors of the Holocaust. The March of the Living, with an
attendance of over 10,000 young people from around the world,
took place on Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, April 21,
2009, and included a three kilometer march from Auschwitz to the
death camp at Birkenau where over 1.5 million Jews were murdered.
These participants are now visiting Israel during the week of
its Memorial Day and Israel 61 Independence Day.
The March
of the Living is summed up by the words of Holocaust survivor
Elie Wiesel: To remain silent is the greatest sin of all
