Team USA Looks Good On First Day of 18th Israel Maccabiah Games

Jerusalem, Israel ---- July 13, 2009 ...... On the first day of competition in the 18th Maccabiah Jewish sports Olympics in Israel, the US dominated the competition in baseball, softball, basketball, rugby and rowing. The nine USA Teams competed in six sports and set the tone for representing a fierce competitor over the next 10 days.

Yesterday’s events precede the highly anticipated 18th Maccabiah Opening Ceremony, to take place this evening at the National Stadium in Ramat Gan, Israel, where Jason Lezak, Open Men’s Swimming, will light the torch.

The Junior Boys’ Baseball Team showed its strength in their first competition with a 30-5 win over Mexico. Open Men’s Softball beat Venezuela 18-3. The Juniors Boys’ Basketball Team dominated Germany, 96-18 and the Youth Boys’ Basketball Team did the same with Italy, 95-35. USA Men’s Rugby beat Canada 34-13.

Results for Men’s Rowing include: Ryan Strauss was first in Single Sculls with 07:00.33 and Gregory Kaplan and Peter Morelli took first place in Double Sculls with 06:41.31. Results for Women’s Rowing include two first place finishes with a Double Scull finish from Elizabeth Barnett, 07:40.75 with Caroline Post and Pairs without Oars – Anna Kamerow, 08.06.12 with Caroline Post. Women’s Open Soccer beat Brazil, 8-0Juniors Boys’ Soccer tied Canada, 0-0 and Youth Men’s Soccer tied Great Britain, 1-1. Masters Men’s Soccer, 45+ lost to Israel 1-3.

In addition to the competition of the Maccabiah, members of the US team are participating in one of Maccabi USA / Sports for Israel’s signature Tzedakah program, Lev L’Lev. All US Jewish athletes and many supporters have brought gifts to give children in local Israel hospitals, rehabilitation centers.
The teams and supporters visit the venues, interact with the kids, provide sports demonstrations and even have the opportunity to compete with some of the children from the Israel Sport Center for the Disabled in Basketball, Tennis and Table Tennis.

As the world’s third largest sports event after the Olympics, the 18th Maccabiah Games in Israel plays host to 3,000 junior Maccabiah athletes, aged 15 -18; 5,000 open athletes, 2,000 masters and Paralympics.
In addition to the visitors, Israel will itself be fielding a team of more than 2,000 athletes.

Sports for which competitors will be going for Gold include: artistic gymnastics, badminton, baseball, basketball, beach volleyball, bridge, cricket, chess, fencing, golf, gymnastics, handball, half-marathon, field hockey, judo, karate, netball, lawn bowls, rowing, rugby, squash, soccer, softball, swimming, table-tennis, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon, track and field, ten-pin bowling, volleyball, water polo, wrestling and windsurfing.
