The Sixth Annual Pope John Paul II Peace Marathon To Take Place In Israel
Jerusalem ---- April 22, 2009 ...... Three weeks before the arrival of Pope Benedict XVI in Israel, the sixth annual Pope John Paul II Peace Marathon will take place tomorrow, Thursday, 23.4.09. This unique marathon, an initiative of the Israel Ministry of Tourism and CSI, the Italian Sports Association, is a fascinating encounter between pilgrims from Italy and other European countries and runners from Bethlehem and Israel. The marathon aims to continue the legacy of Pope John Paul II for peace, brotherhood and inter-faith dialogue. About 100 Israel and Palestine runners are expected to participate in the festive Israel marathon, alongside about 50 runners from Italy. The Italian delegation, headed by senior Vatican official Cardinal Josef Clemens, is the first delegation of the thousands of pilgrims expected to arrive in Israel as a result of the Papal visit, 11-15 May. For the first time, two leading Italian athletes will join the peace marathon: 3 times Olympic foil fencing champion Giovanna Trillini and former AC Milan football star Demetrio Albertini who serves today as the Deputy President of the Italian Football Association. Former Italian volleyball world champion Andrea Zorzi will also join the marathon as in previous years. The delegation members have decided to honor the memory of the millions murdered in the Holocaust by laying a wreath at Yad Vashem on their arrival today, Wednesday. The Jerusalem Municipality, the Civil Administration Authority and the Jerusalem Police are all involved in ensuring the success of the Peace Marathon and will accompany the runners along the route. The marathon will begin tomorrow, 23.4.09, at 07:30 from Manger Square in Bethlehem. On arrival at Rachel's Crossing at approximately 08:00, the Italian and Palestinian runners will be joined by Israeli runners. The marathon will end at Notre Dame Church in Jerusalem with a festive ceremony and the distribution of medals (approx 10:00).
