---- July 7, 2010
. Israel Startup Weekend 2010, will be
a partnership between the Shimon Peres Center for Peace, as the
first ever collaboration of Jewish and Arab hi tech entrepreneurs
and developers from Israel, the Palestinian Authority and the
United States.
"Startup
Weekend is an international event that combines networking of
both the mobile and Internet community," said Israel Startup
Weekend organizer Eddie Reznik. "But this year, we are going
to transcend all digital and political borders. There is no greater
tool for peace and understanding than the Internet and Web 2.0
and as such we are proud to bring creative minds together from
both Israel and the Palestinian territories."
Israel Startup
Weekend 2010 will take place July 14 -16, at the Peres Peace House
in Jaffa.
Startup Weekend has been introduced to over 15,000 entrepreneurs
in more than 100 cities around the world. Founded in June 2007,
Startup Weekend provides a platform to pitch an idea, build the
concept and present it to the audience in around 50 hours. At
least 500 companies have been created over the lifetime of the
worldwide event raising more than $2M in financing.
"Each participant is given two minutes, without any related
equipment, to present their idea to the other participants,"
says Israel Startup
Weekend co-organizer Amir Harel. "The best ideas are
selected and participants are divided into groups and begin the
process of establishing the project. At the end of the conference,
the best idea is selected by a professional judging panel, and
the winner is awarded prize money to finance the startup."
Reznik and
Harel define the project: "The event is an open platform
of ideas and projects that provides networking, resources and
incentives for participants to learn how to turn an idea into
a product. It is a place to meet and work with programmers, marketers,
entrepreneurs and investors to build companies and more importantly
build a community. Our motto - less talk more action.
The selection panel of judges is comprised of representatives
of leading companies, investors and representatives of foundations
such as the law firm of Amit Pollak Matalon, Google Israel, IBM,
Paypal, Deloitte and others.
Behind the
Israel Startup Weekend are entrepreneurs Amir Harel, experienced
in developing and marketing technology products, and Eddie Reznik,
who worked at Sun Microsystems for 13 years.
This year
they joined forces with the Peres Center for Peace, whose Department
of Economics and business are producing the event in the spirit
of cooperation between peoples, which the Center promotes. Department
Director Yoav Stern states: "The field of high tech is a
classic domain for cooperation between Israelis and Palestinians
because in this field fences and barriers do not matter."
Last year,
Israel Startup Weekend was sponsored by IBM, Google Israel and
several other leading brands in the field of hi-tech and Internet.
From over 200 participants and 13 startups created, IsIt
Fact Checking Software was created and captured first place.
IsIt recently registered it patent pending and is currently negotiating
with several private investors.
Startup Weekend
was born in 2007 in the US by Andrew Hyde. Today Startup Weekend
is operated out of Seattle, WA by Marc Nager and Clint Nelsen
with development support coming from Cameron Preston, Mick Thompson
and Timothy Ting.
This creative,
rapidly growing global program has enjoyed tremendous success
in over 52 cities and 12 countries from Los Angeles, New York
and Boston to London, Paris and Tokyo.
Sponsors of
Israel Startup Weekend 2010 include: The Peres Center For Peace,
Mercy Corps, Amit, Pollak, Matalon and Co., Paypal Pte Ltd., IBM
Israel, Google Israel, Deloitte Accounting, Hamovil
Jack Yulzari Ltd., Itay Strum Financial Services, Newsgeek, ESOP
Management and Trust Company Ltd., The Leyden Digital PR, SEO,
Internet Marketing New Media Communications Group and IsIt? Online
Fact Checking Software.
According
to Resnik, Israel is the most logical place for StartUp Weekend.
It is
well known that Israel is the Silicon Wadi next to
the US West Coast "Silicon Valley". For any number of
reasons enjoying a hi-tech IDF army, a heavy influx of
highly intelligent and motivated Russian immigrants, a lack of
natural resources - Israel has become and is respected for being
a hotbed for startups and innovation."
The majority
of participants that will join the nearly sold-out hi-tech, Internet
networking sponsored event in Israel, discovered the event as
it was advertised on social networking Internet sites such as
Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.
Both Jewish and Arab
participants will be coming from a variety of cities and towns
including: Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Ramallah, Herzlia, Druse villages,
Haifa, Hadera, Rehovot, Kfar Sava, Ra'anana, Holon, Beer Sheva,
Sderot, Herzliya, Ramat Aviv, Hod Hasharon, Netanya, Kibbutzim,
Kiryat Shomona, Eilat, Ariel and other towns located in the West
Bank (Judea and Samaria).
Regardless
of the number of companies created in Israel by Startup Weekend
2010, the event illustrates Israel determination to break through
a global recession and create peaceful channels between Israel
and her Arab neighbors. A positive attitude by Israeli entrepreneurs
which has not changed since 1948. An effective attitude of survival
which serves as a shining example to every person, every political
and corporate leader, every company and organization throughout
the world.
The Israel
News Agency will be reporting live from this Israel Startup
Weekend via Twitter and Facebook status updates and Google
News stories.

first on line news organization in Israel. The INA reaches up
to 60 million readers through Google News and Internet social
