Israel
Defense Forces, Security Services On High Alert For Yom Kippur
By
Israel News Agency Staff
Jerusalem,
Israel --- October 7, 2011 .... The Israel Defense Forces, Israel's
internal security organization Shabak and the Israel Police have
gone on the highest alert level for Yom Kippur. As Israel readies
herself to close down all transportation, stores and places of
entertainment to respect Yom Kippur Jewish holiday, several credible
terror and acts of war threats are being watched very carefully.
A
full security closure has been implemented with travel in and
out of the West Bank (Judea and Samaria) until after the Day of
Atonement ends. The strict security measures can only be eased
for humanitarian and or medical reasons and with the permission
of the Israel Civil Administration. Hundreds of police coming
from special units including MAGAV have been deployed in and around
Jerusalem. And threats coming from Syria and Iran to rain Tel
Aviv with missiles if attacked by NATO forces are being dealt
with both inside and outside of Israel's borders with the Israel
Air Force and Israel Navy prepared to respond to any situation.
The
IDF is also monitoring all movements by Hezbollah in Lebanon and
Hamas in Gaza.
The
Israel Police have been holding talks with Israel Arab representatives
in mixed Jewish and Arab towns throughout Israel to reduce tensions
ahead of Yom Kippur.
The
Magen David Adom emergency medical services have raised their
alert to the highest level. Volunteer security forces will guard
synagogues during prayer services
Israel
Defense Minister Ehud Barak said that the IDF is prepared for
all challenges.
"As the
Israel Minister of Defense charged with the safety of the state's
citizens, I can tell you that the IDF, under the leadership of
a former paratrooper, Chief of General-Staff Benny Gantz, is prepared
and ready for the challenges facing us, today and tomorrow, from
near and from far."
Barak added:
"Israel is still the strongest state in the region."
Gantz commented:
"The IDF is constantly developing its adaptability to changes
dictated by the challenges it faces. We can never grow accustomed
to any (operational) concept and we must always study given situations
further and adapt to regional changes. Failure is not an option.
This legacy is 60 years old and every soldier knows it."
Thirty-eight
years after the Yom Kippur War between Israel, Syria and Egypt,
the Israel Defense Forces held a surprise exercise yesterday for
two reserve divisions in an effort to prepare for possible emergency
call-up orders.
The exercise
was supervised by Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz, and included units from
the IDF Northern Command and the IDF Central Command.
The Israel
Defense Forces Ground Forces Commands Col. Shlomi Feuer
labeled the exercise rare, saying that units usually
received a warning of several months before holding such a drill.
This
military exercise is intended to prepare the IDF in the face of
the growing instability in the region and it was not just a coincidence
that it happened today, on the eve of Yom Kippur and the anniversary
of the Yom Kippur War.
Modern Israel,
which was born out of the ashes of the Holocaust, remains prepared
every hour of every day for any kind of threat.
The Jewish nation lives by the slogan "never again"
and has recently announced that Israel and Germany are now cooperating
in a new legal campaign to find and put on trial thousands of
Nazi war criminals. In the spirit of Yom Kippur, Israel is willing
to forgive, but not forget.
From Nazi
Germany to Islamic terrorism, the Israeli security establishment
is not only responsible for the lives of it's Jewish citizens,
but for all Jews around the world. For preserving democracy and
freedom while providing humanitarian aid missions from Haiti to
Japan as it continues to reach out for a true and lasting peace
with her Arab neighbors.
