--- February 27, 2012 .... The Israel Ministry of Tourism continues
to strengthen its ties with the global Christian community. Israel
has just announced that it is hosting the most senior Christian
delegation ever to visit Israel from India. His Eminence Oswald
Gracias Cardinal Archbishop of Mumbai (who also serves as President
of Catholic Bishops of India and Secretary-General of the Federation
of Asian Bishops) is visiting Israel for the second time and Cardinal
Mar George Alencherry, on his first visit to Israel, has just
returned from Rome where he received his nomination as Cardinal
from the Pope.
The
world's youngest Archbishop from Goa and Daman, the most Reverend
Filipe Neri Ferrao is also among the Indian priests visiting the
Holy Land as guests of the Israel Tourism Ministry. The Christian
delegation members will be meeting with Noaz Bar Nir, Director
General of the Israel Ministry of Tourism and will be touring
various Christian sites across Israel.
The Christian
priests visit will last a week beginning Sunday 26 February
2012. On Wednesday, 29 February 2012, the members of the delegation,
including the cardinals, archbishops, bishops and priests, will
be meeting the Director-General of the Israel Ministry of Tourism
Noaz Bar Nir to discuss the strengthening of relations between
Israel and the Christian community of India. The priests will
then visit the Christian sites in Jerusalem and the Galilee and
hold meetings with Patriarchs and Vatican representatives in Israel.
Towards the end of their visit, the members of the delegation
will hold a special mass in the Church of the Nations in Jerusalem,
accompanied by some 1000 Christians from across Israel.
"Israel,
the Holy Land with Jerusalem as its center, is a pilgrimage destination
for tourists and groups from all over the world interested in
a wide variety of religious, cultural and historical sites,"
said Noaz Bar Nir, Director General of the Israel Ministry of
Tourism.
"India
is the most popular source country from Asia for incoming tourism
to Israel. During the past few years, there has been significant
growth in the numbers of Indian tourists visiting Israel. The
huge market potential has yet to be fulfilled and therefore we
continue to strengthen our relations with the Indian Christian
community and with the local tourism industry in India."
In 2010 and
2011, some 40,000 tourists from India visited Israel, twice as
many as in 2009. Due to the Indian market expansion, the Israel
Ministry of Tourism has decided to place India in the center of
its activities in the Asian office. In addition to this, in 2012,
the Israel Ministry of Tourism will be investing approximately
2.5 million shekels in the establishment of a new marketing representation
office in India which will serve to dramatically increase the
number of tourists from India visiting Israel.
