Israel Cabinet Approves Outline for the Release of Ilan Grapel From Egypt

By Israel News Agency Staff

Jerusalem, Israel --- October 27, 2011 .... Part of the following was communicated by the Israel Prime Minister's Media Adviser to the Israel News Agency.

Israel Cabinet ministers have unanimously approved the outline for the release of Israel citizen Ilan Grapel, who is expected to return to the State of Israel today. Israel has acceded to Egypt's request to release 22 prisoners, as well as three detained minors, who hold Egypt citizenship.

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed the relevant authorities to do their utmost in order to bring about the release of Israeli citizen Ouda Tarabin, who has been imprisoned in Egypt for over 11 years.

The Israel Cabinet ministers thanked the US Government for its considerable assistance in facilitating the outline for Grapel's release.

Twenty-five prisoners who were being held in a jail in southern Israel were being bused today to the border with Egypt for a swap for the US Israeli citizen jailed in Cairo on suspicion of espionage. Ilan Grapel and his family have denied that he was ever involved in spy activitity for any government.

Grapel's father, Daniel Grapel, told The Associated Press that his son had been held in isolation in an unknown location and that when they last spoke two weeks ago, he seemed to be in "OK" condition and "getting fed."

"I am happy that this thing will be done and over with and that he will be able to resume his normal life away from Egypt," he said in an interview from his home in Queens, New York.

Grapel, a 27-year-old legal student at Emory Law School in Atlanta, was volunteering at a legal aid organization in Cairo, Egypt when he was arrested on June 12.

"He certainly was not a spy," said US Rep. Gary Ackerman. "He did what college kids do, posted a picture of himself on Facebook."

That, said Ackerman, is "not what Mossad agents do."
