Defense Forces IDF Prevent Terror Attacks

was communicated by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the
Israel Government Press Office to the Israel News Agency.
In
the past week, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) forces have continued
to operate against Islamic Arab terrorist infrastructures in
Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip.
On
Monday, an IDF reserve soldier, 1st Sergeant Ehud Efrati was
killed in a clash with terrorists, during an operation against
terror threats in the southern Gaza Strip. Two IDF soldiers
were lightly wounded in the same incident and evacuated to hospital
in Israel. Another IDF soldier was seriously wounded by gunfire
during an IDF operation in northern Gaza. He was evacuated to
hospital for medical treatment.
Due
to continuous launchings of mortar shells at Israel communities
of the western Negev, on Tuesday the IDF targeted a Hamas terrorists
post in the southern Gaza Strip. In addition, on Wednesday the
Israel Defense Forces (IDF) targeted a mortar shells launching
cell after it launched several mortar shells into Israel. In
these two terror incidents five terrorists were hit.
Between
Wednesday and Thursday, IDF forces with the assistance of the
Israel Security Agency uncovered seven illegal tunnels in active
use between Egypt and the Gaza Strip. The tunnels were being
used to smuggle Islamic terrorists and weapons into and out
of Gaza. The tunnels from Egypt to Gaza were destroyed in a
controlled environment by IDF engineering forces - Handasa Kravit.
During
the past week, Palestinians fired over 50 mortar shells and
approximately 15 rockets, most of which fell in the western
Negev desert of Israel. Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have been
operating to prevent terrorist activity, lead by the Hamas,
near the security fence and to thwart the launching of rockets
and mortar shells into Israel. More than 40 terrorists were
hit in clashes with the IDF, most of them were killed.
On
Monday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) uncovered an explosives
laboratory containing large quantities of weaponry in a building
in Nablus used by Islamic terrorists. A wanted Palestinian was
found hiding in the building. During the operation an IDF soldier
was moderately wounded by Palestinians fire.
On
Tuesday, in a joint IDF, Israel Border Police - MAGAV and ISA
activity in Bethlehem a senior Islamic Jihad terror operative
was arrested. Atef Hasan Mahmud Kamal was one of the most active
young terror operatives during the 1990s. Kamal was expelled
to Lebanon to Marj Alzahur in Lebanon in 1993 due to his terrorist
activities. Kamal returned to terrorist activity upon his return
to Bethlehem.
On
Wednesday, Israel Border Policemen discovered an improvised
handgun and two knifes in the possession of a Palestinian at
a security checkpoint at the entrance to the tomb of the Patriarchs
in Hebron, Israel. The man admitted in his investigation that
he planned to conduct a terror shooting and stabbing attack
against IDF soldiers. On the same day, Israel Defense Forces
(IDF) uncovered a handgun in the possession of a Palestinian
in Ramallah.
Today,
three explosive devices and an improvised explosive device were
discovered in the possession of a Palestinian during an IDF
security check at the Hawara security checkpoint, south of Nablus.
In an initial investigation, the Palestinian admitted to that
he planned to activate them against Israel civilians or IDF
soldiers. The terrorist was taken for questioning by Israel
security forces and the explosive devices were detonated in
a controlled environment by Israel Border Police MAGAV sappers.
In
the past week, three Israel civilians were lightly wounded when
rocks were hurled at their vehicle while traveling near the
Israeli community of Karme Zur. During the week Israel Defense
Forces (IDF) arrested 84 wanted Palestinians in the Judea and
Samaria region. The men were taken for questioning by Israel
security forces.
