Jerusalem ---- May 21, 2009 ...... Part of the following was communicated by the Israel Defense Forces to the Israel News Agency.

Despite the fact that Israel unilaterally withdrew from Gaza in a peace move over three years ago and a cease fire is supposed to be in place, a Hamas Qassam (Kassam) terror rocket was launched from Gaza and destroyed a civilian home in Sderot, Israel.

In response to the continuous firing of terror rockets and mortars from the Gaza Strip, including nearly 685 rockets and mortars that hit Israel since the beginning of 2009, the Israel Air Force recently attacked two weaponry production sites in Gaza City and four smuggling tunnels on the Gaza Egypt border. It was the first time Israel has attacked the Islamic terror group since a January 18 ceasefire went into effect.

The Qassam rocket slammed between two houses in the Israel Negev town of Sderot on Tuesday, causing extensive damage to one building and lightly wounding an 18-year-old in the other house. The teenager was taken to hospital with shrapnel wounds in his back.

Sderot Mayor David Buskila came to the site of the Hamas Qassam terror rocket attack with the mayor of Rome, Gianni Alemanno, and Noam Shalit, the father of kidnapped Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit.

"The government of Israel has to maintain its sovereignty. I'm not a security adviser and I don't tell the government how to operate, but all we're asking for is quiet," Buskila said.

"Unfortunately, we went through quite a few incidents like this during the war," Noam Shalit said, referring to the Second Lebanon War. "I don't envy the people of Sderot and I hope they have quiet.

As Hamas terrorists continue to attack Israel using the civilian population in Gaza as a human shield, Israel continues to transfer humanitarian aid on an almost daily basis. Yesterday, 106 trucks carrying goods, 460,000 liters of fuel and 350 tons natural gas were transferred into the Gaza Strip via the various crossings.

The IDF states that they will continue to respond to any attempts to destabilize Israel's south and the deliberate targeting of Israel civilians.
