Jerusalem,
Israel --- January 4, 2013 ... Hadassah National President Marcie
Natan planted the first trees in Israel in what is to be a memorial
forest for the victims of the Newtown Connecticut shooting massacre.
The forest,
planned to include more than 3,000 trees, is being planted in
the Beersheba River Park, in the Negev desert.
The
roots of this mulberry tree will hold the desert soil, produce
fruit, and give shade to the families recently under fire who
will enjoy the park. Trees are a Biblical symbol of life, and
the saplings donated will bloom, grove after grove, in the memory
of the children and the staff in Newtown, Natan said.
Hadassah has
raised more than $60,000 toward the planting of more than 3,000
trees honoring both the teachers and young students of the December
14 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The trees will be
part of the Beersheva River Park, a 1,700-acre water, environmental
and commercial area being built by the Jewish National Fund in
Israels desert city.
The idea for
the Newtown Israeli forest was created from a request by Veronique
Pozner, whose son, Noah, age 6, was the only Jewish victim of
the shooting. Pozner requested that memorial contributions be
directed toward the planting of trees in Israel.
The president
of Hadassah, Marcie Natan, said her organization decided quickly
that it wanted to include all 26 victims of the tragedy.
Everybody
was so affected by the massacre and wanted to do something to
express their solidarity with the families, Natan said.
At $18 per tree, the gifts in memory of the Newtown victims thus
far are enough to cover more than 3,300 trees.
Hadassah,
the Women's Zionist Organization of America, is a volunteer organization
that inspires a passion for and commitment to its partnership
with the land and people of Israel. It enhances the health of
people worldwide through its support of medical care and research
at the Hadassah Medical Organization in Jerusalem. Hadassah empowers
its members and supporters, as well as, youth in Israel and America
through opportunities for personal growth, education, advocacy
and Jewish continuity.
Connecticut
is home to over 7,000 Hadassah members of which 230 of them live
in Newtown.
