Netanyahu
Enhances Israel, China Cooperation
Jerusalem,
Israel --- May 11, 2013
Israel Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu concluded a warm and successful visit to China with
a festive dinner hosted by senior Chinese economic leaders, Chinese
government representatives and Israeli and Chinese business people.
"This
is the conclusion of a very successful visit," said Prime
Minister Netanyahu. "I met this afternoon with President
Xi and we agreed to establish a task force of senior Israeli and
Chinese government officials to work out a strategic plan to enable
the highest level of cooperation between Israeli technologists,
businesspeople and experts and all facets of the Chinese economy.
I think this is a breakthrough, and its very, very significant
for Israel and I believe it will also be significant for China."
Indeed, Netanyahu's
trek to China was extremely productive with Israel and China signing
a $400 million trade agreement this past week, bringing the financial
relationship between the two nations to more than $2 billion.
The Israel China trade deal, signed by Israel Finance Ministry
Accountant-General Michal Abadi-Boiangiu and officials from Chinas
Finance Ministry, was agreed upon shortly after Netanyahu arrived
on a five-day trip to China. Netanyahu was greeted with full military
honors, including a 19-gun salute outside the Great Hall of the
People in the capital.
"China
faces the needs of rapid urbanization, explosive growth of cities,
and growth from middle income to higher incomes. There is only
one way to ensure a successful transition in both areas: technology.
The decision of the Chinese government and the Israeli government
to join forces, I think is very very important for both of us.
We will have to encourage, in my opinion, in the areas that you
decide that are important to you. We will have to encourage as
many partnerships and joint ventures as we can. Because this is
the best way to assure a continuous infusion of technology."
Netanyahu
in a meeting with the new China Prime Minister, Li Keqiang said:
My main message in this visit is that I think Israel can
be the perfect junior partner for China in its pursuit of economic
excellence and competitive advantage, by offering our technological
capabilities.
We are
a small country but have a great concentration of technological
prowess in many disciplines, and I think we can cooperate by scaling
up these technologies for the benefit of both countries,
he said.
It appears
to be a perfect relationship as Israel has the technology, China
has the manpower.
If falafel and Peking Duck ever had something in common it just
may be telecommunications, computer technology, biotechnology
and kosher food.
As of 2010, there were more than 1,000 Israeli firms operating
in China. In particular, Chinese firms play an essential role
in the $10-billion kosher foods industry, with 500 factories across
China producing kosher food for the American and Israeli markets.
In addition
to kosher food, Israel and China began extensive military cooperation
in the 1980s. Some estimate that Israel has sold arms worth $4
billion to China during this period. China has looked to Israel
for the arms and technology it wants but cannot acquire from either
the US or Russia.
In August 2012, vessels from China's PLA Navy's 11th escort fleet,
led by Rear Admiral Yang Jun-fei, anchored at Israel's Haifa naval
base for a four-day goodwill visit and marked 20 years of cooperation
between the Israel Defense Forces and the PLA.
Netanyahu
repeated saying that Israel admires China and feels
a connection to the Chinese civilization and people
throughout his visit. He added that both are ancient peoples with
a glorious past, a difficult in between period, and soaring
into the future.
"The
need for innovation never stops. It always continues, at every
stage of the business, of the development. This is the way to
assure that the Israeli partners continue to infuse technology
into Chinese needs, Chinese businesses, Chinese projects, in China
and outside of China," said Netanyahu.
"So I
have a simple suggestion. Lets go. How do you say it in
Chinese? Jai oh."
