Israel Cabinet: Palestine Terrorists Using TV Markings Punish Real Media

At the weekly Cabinet meeting in Jerusalem, Israel Defense Minister Amir Peretz briefed ministers on the incident near the Kisufim junction http://tinyurl.com/3aapdl.

Israel Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said: "Islamic Jihad terrorists, using a vehicle camouflaged with television insignia, attempted to infiltrate Israel at the Kisufim junction by taking advantage of the special sensitivity of Israel - a country which upholds democratic values by allowing the media to function with
freedom and independence www.fpa.org.il/?categoryId=406 in the most sensitive of areas.

This was not the first attempt in recent weeks in which terrorist organizations have attempted to perpetrate attacks by taking advantage of Israel’s respect for basic moral norms. The Israel Government and the security establishment view this incident with utmost gravity. As I stated last week, operations in the Gaza Strip will continue as long as necessary, in the relevant contexts, in order to prevent
terrorist activities and attempts to infiltrate into Israel and attack its citizens, and to prevent Kassam rocket fire against Sderot and the communities adjacent to the Gaza Strip.”

Israel Transportation and Road Safety Minister Shaul Mofaz briefed ministers on his participation in strategic dialogue talks with the US and said that the Americans have recently shown great openness and the desire to work together by exchanging intelligence and other assessments.

Transportation and Road Safety Minister Mofaz briefed ministers on the danger to aviation safety, especially at Ben-Gurion International Airport, posed by pirate radio broadcasts.

The Israel Cabinet discussed the issue of salary payments in Israel City of Sderot and the communities adjacent to the Gaza Strip and decided as follows: the Cabinet approved the 5.6.07 agreement between the Government, the Economic Organizations Coordination Bureau and the Histadrut labor
federation on the issue.

The Cabinet authorized the Israel Ministerial Committee on Legislation and Law Enforcement to amend existing legislation so as to determine that current wage agreements will be valid for all workers whose places of residence and employment are in the area.

The Cabinet decided to request that the Knesset expedite discussion of the aforesaid amendments.

The Cabinet amended the procedures for selecting the Attorney General.

Israel Defense Minister Peretz and Deputy Defense Minister Ephraim Sneh discussed the 14.4.07 Cabinet decision in which the Defense Ministry was assigned overall responsibility for the Home
Front in times of emergency.

Prime Minister Olmert noted that concern for the Home Front has been on the Government’s agenda for several months in order to overcome gaps that were created over many years. He added that the Government has transferred - and is transferring - considerable funds to install, repair and refurbish
shelters in both the north and the south.

The Cabinet amended various salary arrangements for academics and engineers employed by the Israel Broadcasting Authority.

The Israel Cabinet discussed arrangements for vaccinating animals against rabies in 2007-2011.

The Cabinet discussed arrangements for combating bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in 2007-2009.

The Cabinet discussed Tourism Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch’s proposal to cancel entry visa requirements for Russian citizens. Staff work on this issue will continue.

The Cabinet approved Israel Minister Avigdor Lieberman’s membership in the Ministerial Committee on National Security Affairs.
