---- May 24, 2009 ...... The British are very fond of the word
lovely. And perhaps they might have described the 123rd Hertfordshire
County Show as "lovely". Or perhaps even as "brilliant."
But for this native of New York who has spent two decades living
in Israel - I could only say that for this sun kissed day north
of London, it was nothing less than sheer delight.
As
one who has never feasted his eyes on the pageantry of an English
County Fair or show, I was extremely impressed by how well organized
this event was. From members of the local Rotary Club directing
cars into acres of a green grass parking lot to the layout and
activities provided by the show.
The
Israel News Agency interviewed Mike Harman, the Show Secretary
of the Hertfordshire Agricultural
Society, who commented: "Although the Hertfordshire County
Show is already widely acknowledged as the best value for money
community event in the County, we are determined to extend our
growing reputation in 2009. We strongly believe that the 2009
Family Advance ticket offered exceptional Credit Crunch
beating value at less than £4 per hour, per family! We warmly
invited both first time visitors, and our regular Show supporters,
to join us in celebrating the 123rd Hertfordshire County Show
yesterday and today at our Redbourn Showground.

Harman
is a true gentleman. Although he was managing over 30,000 people
who attended and hundreds of support staff and sponsors, he still
made the time to provide directions to various events for children
who were passing by.
These
colorful and fun events included something for everyone.
From watching sheepdogs rounding up geese, motorcycle stunts,
horseback show jumping and a dog versus children children contest
to a children's circus, cattle show, trained soaring eagles and
vultures, GPS guided tractors and a British
Army exhibit. The UK army set up a number of climbing walls
to challenge both children and adults. Nearby there was an emergency
medical unit with combat soldiers who recently returned from Iraq
and Afghanistan explaining how automatic rifles and artillery
work. A few meters away stood the British Veterans exhibit and
the Royal Air Force display.

New
additions to this years program included: The Hertfordshire
Land Army Girls and Timber Corps tribute display in the Grand
Ring on both days. The theme was From our wonderful Land
Army Girls to modern Satellite Robots, and the interactive
display will demonstrate the changes in farming techniques and
machinery since the 1940s. Following the tribute display
on Saturday, a celebratory afternoon tea for 65 original Hertfordshire
Land Army Girls and their guests, hosted by Caroline Tapster,
the Show President, was held in the Members Marquee.
One
could not miss the Food Court and the Food Hall located on two
opposite ends of the show displaying the tastiest fresh meats,
fish, chicken and organic dishes. There were homemade sausage
rolls, seafood cocktails, Mediterranean food, twisted almond and
chocolate Danish, chocolate fountains, fresh lemonade and traditional
English pies - Cornish hen, game and the best smoked cheddar cheese
that I have ever tasted!

But
what perhaps impressed me most was the tranquil, friendly and
warm spirit of the English who attended this two day event.
As they walked passed vendors selling food, wine, horseback riding
equipment, Crocs shoes, roofing, outdoor furniture, country suits
and Sheffield knives to residential cleaning companies, Australian
hats, solar energy consultants, fishing and outdoor camping equipment
and the latest cars on the market, it was smile from ear to ear.

"The
aim of our Society is to promote farming and agriculture and all
associated skills, crafts, trades and professions," said
Caroline Tapster, Chief Executive Hertforshire County Council.
"We achieve our aim through organising the annual Herts County
Show, which is held on the Showground on the last May bank holiday
weekend each year. We own 70 acres of land situated just 300m
from Junction 9 of the M1 at Redbourn, Hertfordshire."

The Hertfordshire
County Show can trace its origins back to 1879 when a ploughing
match was arranged by the Hertfordshire Agricultural Society in
the grounds of Hatfield House. Today the Show is still run by
the Hertfordshire Agricultural Society but it is much, much more
than a ploughing match.
The
Hertfordshire County Show is the highlight of the Countys
outside event calendar. The organizers say that with every passing
year the Hertfordshire County Show gets bigger and better, and
with the superb balanced combination of traditional displays and
demonstrations, combined with some new, modern and exciting 2009
additions, it offered a fun-filled day out for all the family.
Not
sure if it was the golden and green sprawling hills of this English
countryside, the colorful musical bands or perhaps the Jim's Gardening
Guys calendar of 2009, there was not a sad face to be seen. But
rather the happy remnants of hundreds of sun tanned children licking
on ice cream and their parents in tow walking hand in hand.
